Maria Christina Mahoney

Maria Christina Mahoney March 30, 1949 - April 23, 2011 A woman, wife, mother and grandmother loved by many, and touched our hearts deeply. She was born on March 30, 1949 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to Ernesto and Berta Cruz. She was the youngest of three children, siblings Rosa Grajales (deceased) and Edwin Cruz. Although the family left Puerto Rico while Maria was young and moved to New York City, her family took annual trips back to their beloved island for Christmas.While she spent the majority of her years in the United States, Puerto Rico would always remain close to her heart. Growing up in New York, she enjoyed a life filled with dancing, food, fun, and family. Her love of music, including the Beatles, started as a young girl and continued on throughout her life. She was often found singing or humming to herself while doing just about everything (she was often caught dancing in the streets of NY where passer-by-ers threw money at her). Maria attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School and went on to graduate from St. Michael’s Academy in Manhattan in 1967. On January 25, 1969, she married the love of her life at St. Patrick’s (old) Cathedral in Manhattan, New York. Together with her loving husband of 42 years, William B Mahoney Jr, they had four children. After a vacation to Florida in 1978, they decided to move and raise their family there. Maria was a giver and a lover of the Lord. She gave selflessly of her time and was committed to her church. She loved helping people from all walks of life and never thought twice about how helping another would impact her. She lived this as an example to others, but most importantly as an example to her children. She is survived by William B Mahoney Jr, husband, Catherine, William III, Madeline and Patricia, her children, her nine grandchildren (Catherine) Ryan, Isabella, and Anthony, (William) Rachel, William IV (Liam), Cameron, and Clare, (Patricia) Audrie and Andrew and her brother, Edwin Cruz. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be at Savino Weissman Funeral Home, 2950 N State Rd 7, Margate, FL 33063 on Thursday, April 28, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. where a wake service will be celebrated at 7:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 5980 University Drive, Parkland, FL 33067, 954-323-8012.
